The artworks pictured on this page are all original creations. They are sculptured by hand around a mirror and are made of natural recycled wood fibre, hardened and coated against damage. Each one is inset with semi-precious stones of Africa. No damage was done to the environment in the making of these sculptures. 

Each one is an original creation, depicting some aspect of African life. No moulds are used, or cast after the artwork has been completed. 

They should be displayed indoors and protected from harsh sunlight.

Giraffe Mirror Sculpture

Depicted here are two giraffe with necks entwined. This is a typical pose adopted by giraffe in the wilds of Africa.

Yellow Billed Hornbill Mirror Sculpture

The Yellow-Billed Hornbill depicted in this sculpture is a most-loved resident in South Africa.

Its Latin name is: Tockus leucomelas. It is wide- spread across South Africa and its endearing habits can be closely observed in the Kruger National Park where it becomes quite tame when in constant contact with people. 

The semi-precious stone used to depict the white markings of the hornbill, is Howlite, a fairly rare form of Magnesite. Howlite is found only in Zimbabwe, and is an opaque white stone with thin black veins running through it.

Ostrich Mirror Sculpture

This sculpture symbolises the ostrich industry of South Africa. The period 1865 to 1870 saw the start of the Ostrich farming industry in the Klein Karoo. The town of Oudtshoorn in the South Western Cape Province of South Africa soon established itself as the Ostrich Capital of the world. Ostrich feathers were considered the finest accessories to be worn.

Fortunes were made and lost. The ostrich – “Struthio camelus” is the largest and heaviest living bird in the world. Genuine ostrich eggshell and ostrich feathers have been used in this sculpture as a tribute tothis era of South African history.

This original sculpture depicts two young African elephant bulls with trunks upraised. Family: Elephantidae

Neethlingshof Mirror Sculpture

This sculpture depicts the Cape Dutch Gables of Neethlingshof Wine Estate in the Cape Proveince of South Africa. The present house was built in 1814 by Charles Marais. The house was renamed Neethlingshof of his son-in-law, a flambouyant character. It is situated on the Stellenbosch wine route.

South African wines are world renowned and this scuplture is a tribute to one of the great wine cellars of this area.

The semi-precious stone used in this sculpture is Amethyst. It is a variety of cystalised quatz, ranging in colour from deep purple to pale lavender. Amethyst is said to bestow stability, strengh and peace.

This sculpture depicts one of the series of the "big 5". Shown here is a typical lion family, resting at noon before the night's hunt. The latin name is: Panthero Leo. order: Carnivorae. Famil: Felidae. Genus: Panthera.

The semi-precious stone used in this sculpture id verdite, mined on Mingerhoutkloof in Nelspruit. This is the largest known deposit of verdite in the world.

Verdite is believed to cleanse the body, soften abrasive character traits and to improve fertility.

Rhino in Acacias - Big Five Series

This original sculpture depicts one of the series of the "Big Five" of South Africa. Depicted here is the White Rhino, Latin name: Ceratotherim simum simum Order: Perissodactyla Family: Rhinocerotidae Genus: Ceratotherim.

Rhinos faced extinction mainly because of the prized rhino horn, believed by many to be anaphrodisiac. Rhinos look pre-historic and probably existed in their current form for many millions of years. The White Rhino has a broad square muzzle, unlike the pointed prehensile upper lip of the Black Rhino .

The semi-precious stone used in the sculpture is Verdite, mined on Mingerhoutkloof, in Nelspruit.This is the largest know deposit in the world. Verdite is believed to cleanse the body and to improve fertility. Yellow Jasper and Picture Jasper are used as the stony outcrop.

Lionfish

This sculpture depicts the Peacock Lionfish of the family:Scorpaenida: Lionfish; Scorpionfish. The spectacular members of this family possess modified dorsal fin rays, which contain poison to catch unwary predators.

The semi-precious stone used in this sculpture is Red Jasper Jasper is believed to bring good health, courage and wisdom to the user.

The fins are made from copper and are free-moving in a slight breeze which brings life and animation to this sculpture.

Peacock's Pride

This original sculpture pays tribute to the magnificent plumage of the peacock. The beautiful iridescent shell used in the sculpture is the Paua shell. This ornamental shell is from a large edible shellfish of the genus: Haliotus, found in New Zealand. It is much sought after for use in jewellery and decoration.

The peacock, according toancient Greek legend, was sacred to the goddess Hera.

Early Christians are believed to have used the peacock to symbolise the resurrection of the body of Christ and the immortality of the soul.

In China, feathers were used to pay taxes because they were needed as decorations during royal processions
